Opportunities for women in the Bar and Bench

Over the last few years, the legal profession in India has undergone a paradigms shift . In today’s world women are at par with their male counterparts. Like all other industries, the work of a women in the legal field knows no bounds.Today, other than a Court round presence , career opportunities in corporate houses, law agencies, litigation and administrative services, the presence of women has gone higher substantially.

It has been seen that women in the legal field have succeeded in establishing themselves at par with some of the distinguished stalwarts of this profession. The achievements of women in this field are increasing as six women- Ms Madhavi Goradia Diwan,Ms Anitha Shenoy, Ms Aparajita Singh,Ms Menaka Guruswami, Ms Aishwarya Bhati, Ms Priya Hingorani recently designated as senior Advocates in the Supreme Court Of India. Honourable justice Indu Malhotra became the first woman to be elevated as Supreme Court Judge from the Bar in April 2018.

The opportunities for women are immense and it depends on the dedication with which one dives in to the profession. So, after acquiring your degree in law there are ample opportunities available.Skills sets such as attentiveness to minute details,logical interpretation and perfect judgement along with professional skills help in gaining entry in to legal field. In my teaching experience of almost fifty years I saw women completing their law degrees with distinction and by simple encouragement selected in PCS J in different states.

In 2016 batch four women candidates selected in UP PCS J from the very Dewan Law College Meerut. Now it is not that women enter for law degree after graduation.Afterintermediate in B.Com. LL.B. and B.A.LL.B.they can join for law degree in five years course. In colleges having all infrastructures they become all perfect for practice as well as for competitive exams.

A close watch on the market dynamics reveals that several international firms are opening their offices and branches in India and a fair number of pass-outs are being absorbed for back office work.In addition,LPOs are on hiring spree for fresh Law graduates.Now the dynamics have expended so much that from other professionals like B.Tech,MBA,MCA,MBBS this profession is chosen.
